One winner per category

What to buy, and what it costs today

The top pick from each of the seven categories, with the price Amazon is showing right now. Every one of them is ranked against published criteria — load ratings, coverage, wattage, warranty terms — and nothing else.

  • The two questions that decide everything

How big is the garage, and what can you spend?

A 70-inch workbench is an excellent purchase in a three-car garage and a mistake in a single bay that still parks a car. So these pages start from the space and the money, and build a costed list from there — with a running total computed from live prices.

    By garage size

Pick the garage you actually have

    • Small garageA build for a tight single bay that still parks a car — wall shelving, a rail, a folding bench and a narrow overhead rack.
    • One-car garageA build for a standard single bay: wall shelving, a 48-inch bench, a rolling chest that parks under a shelf, and a 3x6 overhead rack.
    • Two-car garageA complete two-car garage plan — 27,000 lumens, a 4x8 overhead rack, a 48-60 inch bench, a documented chest and the right heater size.
    • Three-car garageA three-car garage plan built around zoning: a dedicated work bay, a storage wall, 42,000 lumens and the gas-heater threshold.
    • High-ceiling garageWhat changes above about 11 feet — dimmable high bays, far more vertical storage, stratified heat and a radiant-heater height limit.

    By budget

    Buy in the right order

    • Under $500The highest usability per dollar: light, wall shelving, a rail, pegboard and bins, with a live running total and nothing on the floor.
    • Under $1,000The full working-garage build: light, wall storage, an overhead rack, a 48-inch bench and a chest publishing 100 lb per drawer.
    • Under $2,500Where the big-ticket items compete: heating, a cabinet system and a floor coating, with an honest case for which two to choose.
    • Garage makeover on a budgetThe cheap and free moves ranked by impact — paint, light, getting things off the floor — against the expensive ones that change less.
    • Organizing a garage full of toolsSorting a large tool collection by frequency and weight, then matching each group to the right storage — wall, chest, bin or shelf.

    Why trust this

What we did, and what we did not

Every figure is the maker's own

Load ratings, coverage per gallon, BTU, lumens, wattage, warranty terms — all cited to the manufacturer, with a Sources list on the page saying what each citation was used for.

We say when a spec is missing

A tool chest with no published per-drawer rating gets exactly that in its cons. Not one fixture on our lighting shortlist publishes a CRI figure, so those pages say so instead of estimating one.

No ratings we did not collect

There are no star ratings, review counts or testimonials anywhere on this site, and none in its structured data. We hold no review data of our own, so we publish none.

    We have not tested these

Stated in a visible block on every ranked page. We have not bolted these to a wall, loaded them to failure or run them through a winter — and we would rather say so than describe testing that left no trace.

    How this is funded

    Plain English, no small print

Garage & Workbench is published by Iron Mako Media and paid for by the Amazon Associates Program. Click a buy button, buy something, and Amazon pays us a percentage — the price you pay is identical either way. We take no payment for placement, run no sponsored rankings, and nobody buys their way to the top of a list here.

Every price on the site is fetched live from Amazon and stamped with the date it was checked. If that fetch stops working, the numbers disappear and the buttons read “Check price” instead — we would rather show you nothing than a number that is three weeks old.

    Measure four things, then start

Floor area. The gap you walk through with the car parked. The clear ceiling run. Joist spacing, center to center. Those four numbers rule out half the market for you — and Garage & Workbench is organized so you can use them.
